Festivals of May – Meet Us At One Of The Following…

Wavy Gravy’s 80th Birthday – May 22nd

Wavy 80 event graphic

Where: Somo Village Event Center – Rohnert Park, CA 94928

When: May 22nd, 2016 – One full day of music from some classics!

What: A celebration of Wavy Gravy’s 80th Birthday! Wavy Gravy originally known as Hugh Romney, became famous in the counter culture movement when he stood on the stage at Woodstock and announced….” What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000!” Over the past four decades, Wavy has done many things to help make the world a better place.

Proceeds will benefit the Seva Foundation: A Berkeley based organization founded in 1978 by a group of medical professionals, counterculture activists, musicians and compassionate individuals, all dedicated helping others through the prevention of blindness. In the past 38 years, Seva has restored eyesight for 4 million people with programs reaching many of the poorest places in the world including: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, India, Africa and Native American communities in the U.S. Today, Seva’s sight restoration programs serve one million people annually.

Why: Because Wavy Gravy is a great guy with a big heart. Also, what better reason to listen to live music in the California valley?

Delfest – May 26th-29th

Admat

Where: Allegany County Fairgrounds – Cumberland, MD

When: May 226th-29th – Yonder Mountain String Band plays on May 26th – 10:15 PM – 11:45 PM

What: There are several ways to start off your festival endeavors this summer season and then there are the BEST ways to start it off right – one of those being Delfest. As Grateful Web put it, “The festival originated from the desire to create a family-friendly music festival celebrating the rich legacy of McCoury music while creating a forum for world-class musical collaborations and to showcase fresh new talent with a down-home feeling. Produced in association with High Sierra Music, the 9th Annual DelFest will again offer a quality festival experience stamped with the unique McCoury touch.  Personally chosen by Del, the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, MD served as the perfect location for DelFest–nestled along the Potomac River in the scenic Appalachian Mountains, the Fairgrounds are convenient to four major airports and easily reached by rail or road.”

Why: Because The Del McCoury Band makes for wonderful hosts (have you seen the line-up?) and this would be one we wouldn’t miss – so neither should you! DELYEAH!

Dark Star Jubilee – May 27th – 29th

image1

Where: Legend Valley – Thornville, Ohio

When: May 26th-29th – Yonder Mountain String Band plays on May 28th – 12:30 – 2:00 AM

What: Take some of the jammiest bands around the country and surround them with dead-heads (including ourselves) and jammin’ enthusiasts and you have one of the best weekends in the month of May. Welcome to The Dark Star Jubilee. Hosted by our fellow Colorado friends, Dark Star Orchestra, this weekend is a great way to see a lot of jammin’ in a short amount of time. Don’t miss it as each band brings a unique sound and experience to the scene.

Why: Because the Grateful Dead is such a huge part of our lives, improvisations are fun, and Dark Star Orchestra knows how to throw a party.

Summer Camp Music Festival – May 27th-29th

13055074_1019832824720259_8029497175250073160_o

Where: Chillicothe, IL

When: May 27th-29th – Yonder Mountain String Band plays on May 29th – at 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM and 2:45 AM – 4:00 AM

What: The only way to spend Memorial Day Weekend, Summer Camp Festival takes place on the final weekend of May. Summer Camp Festival is the ultimate (in our book, the only) way to end off the May festival line-up. With over 100 different artists over the three day stent, you can see some of your favorite jam bands and discover some new ones along the way. Another great reason to attend Summer Camp Festival is their efforts to Make A Difference, which is the icing on the cake when it comes to good tunes matched with good karma points.

Why: Check out the massive line-up and then ask yourself, “Why not.”

YMSB_BLACKSHEEP_PROMO_2015

For nearly 18 years, Yonder Mountain String Band has redefined bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n’ roll and improvisation. Notoriously independent, Yonder Mountain String Band has paved the path for a genre and sound as unique as the band itself.

Yonder Mountain String Band consisting of Adam Aijala (guitar, vocals), Dave Johnston (banjo, vocals), Ben Kaufmann (bass, vocals), Allie Kral (violin, vocals), and Jacob Jolliff (mandolin, vocals) — began a new era for the band with the release of Black Sheep. The first YMSB album produced by the band itself, Black Sheep is, by any measure, considered the most mesmeric of their career. Black Sheep marks the first time in Yonder’s history that they utilized, throughout an entire record, the conventional five-piece instrumental arsenal of bluegrass music (guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass), proving yet again that the band continues to be a progressive

Yonder Mountain String Band will feature original tunes pulled from the recent release Black Sheep, along with an arsenal of originals and re-invented covers of classic hits that span a variety of genres to create a Yonder experience like none before.

Drive By Truckers

McClister_DBT_1048

Co-founded by Patterson Hood (guitar, vocals) and Mike Cooley (guitar, vocals), the alternative country five-piece Drive-By Truckers also includes Brad Morgan (drums), Jay Gonzalez (keyboards, guitar, vocals, accordion, saw), and Matt Patton (bass, vocals). Their 12th studio album, English Oceans (March 2014; ATO Records) is an elegantly balanced and deeply engaged effort that finds the group refreshed and firing on all cylinders. Drive-By Truckers recently released their long awaited live album, It’s Great To Be Alive: Recorded Live at The Fillmore (October 2015), which was recorded over a three-night run at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco, CA.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

PHJB

The New Orleans jazz band Preservation Hall Jazz Band got their name directly from the Preservation Hall venue located in the French Quarter. Preservation Hall was among the few NOLA venues that welcomed both Caucasian and African-American musicians during the early 1960s when the Jazz Band first got its start. The current line-up includes Joe Lastie Jr. (drums, backing vocals), Clint Maedgen (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, vocals), Rickie Monie (piano), Mark Braud (trumpet, backing vocals), Ronell Johnson (tuba, piano, vocals), Charlie Gabriel (clarinet, tenor saxophone, vocals) and Ben Jaffe (tuba, string bass, banjo, percussion, backing vocals). In 2013, Preservation Hall Jazz Band released their first album, That’s It!, consisting of all original material written over the course of their more than 50-year career.
