Learn more about the band

“After 11 years of hard work and a relentless tour schedule, Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers have gained a reputation for their highly original, tradition-inspired bluegrass built on a strong foundation of intricate harmonies and electrifying stage energy. The Henhouse Prowlers use traditional bluegrass as a base, and make it their own by providing a show that’s danceable throughout with uptempo drive and bouncing mid-tempo grooves, all while covering contemporary topics in a largely original repertoire. Their reverence for the forefathers of bluegrass is palpable as they push the music forward on their own path.”

Henhouse Prowlers – The Bluegrass Ambassadors of the U.S.

Also, besides being incredible talented and providing a great live show, HenHouse Prowlers have done some International travels on behalf of the our great nation! Since 2014 the Henhouse Prowlers have been working closely with the US State Department as ‘Bluegrass Ambassadors’.  The band has been to 11 countries so far and there are more on the horizon.  Three of the tours included 10 countries in both East and West Africa, as well as a two week stint in Russia in May of this year.  These excursions include performances and collaborations with local musicians as well as workshops on subjects ranging from the history of bluegrass, instruction on individual instrument and running a band as a business.

A Ben Wright recounts their travels to Africa, “A two week stint in Nigeria ended up with the band performing the African mega hit “Chop My Money” with Peter Okoye of P-Square.  Peter and his brother Paul are without question the biggest stars on the continent and it goes without saying that sharing the stage one of them was a mind-blowing experience.”   Check out the video below and article from pri.org:

This incredible video of Henhouse Prowlers playing for a group of Ugandan musicians who lose it once they realize that HenHouse were singing their song in the Ugandan language!

Enjoy This Grateful Dead Cover of “Shakedown Street”

This past May, our friends at Jambase celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, by teaming up with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. They began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of their favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and we were honored when they asked Yonder Mountain String Band to cover “Shakedown Street”.

As Ben Kaufmann said, “Lets play a song, that everyone can like, whether you are 2 or maybe even as old as 26, may even as old as Jake Jolliff. Lets play a song called “Shakedown Street.”

Well…what do you think folks? Did they pass the audition?

In the next couple of months we will be asking our Kinfolk what covers they would like to see this Fall Tour. We invite you to take part in this conversation and much more by signing up for our exclusive emails.

So turn this one up, sip on your Sunday morning cup of joe, and let these vibes take you to another place and time on this beautiful Fall day.
