Special Guests Announced for New Year Eve Shows at the Boulder Theater

New Year’s Eve Just Got Even Better

Yonder Mountain String Band returns to Boulder, Colorado for a 4-night New Year’s Eve affair at the beloved Boulder Theater December 30January 2. A Yonder Mountain tradition, these hometown shows are the icing on the yearly Yonder cake. As in years past, we are thrilled to announce an all-star line up of special guests to help us bring another one to a close, and celebrate the arrival of 2016.

On Wednesday, December 30th, we welcome the one and only Sam Bush to kick off the NYE run. Honorably called “the King of Newgrass”, Sam Bush is just hitting his stride as the best Mandolin player on the scene.  Sam is no stranger when it comes to sitting in with Yonder, whether it is in the mountains at Telluride Bluegrass, the sandy beaches at Strings & Sol, the main stage at Bonnaroo, or anywhere in between, the Yonder /Sam Bush combination is a force to be reckoned with. We’re honored to welcome him back to the Boulder Theater stage, and look forward to the moments of synergy between this mandolin legend and our very own mandolin master, Mr. Jacob Jolliff.

Recently named “Dobro Player of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association, and dubbed the “Muhammed Ali of the dobro” Jerry Douglas is solely responsible for bending and redefining the sound of the instrument within the context of a myriad of genres. Jerry also has spent quality time with Yonder over the years, these moments created have been jaw-dropping.  We look forward to reuniting with Jerry on Friday, January 1st, as he tastefully blends in his dobro wizardry with complimentary licks and mind-bending solos.

It has been far too long since Yonder Mountain has connected with guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan.  Be prepared to be amazed.  Whether it’s bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations across genres, this man is bound to take you for a tuneful ride with his creative guitar approach. Stanley has performed in over 60 countries, on 6 continents, and has performed with every type of musician imaginable.  We look forward to seeing what we create with him on our final night of the run on<>
Saturday, January 2nd.

“Love Before You Can’t” Pre-Tour Skype Edition

Just a few more days until we hit the road…but who’s counting anyways?jj

We’ve been looking forward to the fall tour since the day we stepped off the stage at Red Rocks Amphitheater this past summer! We took a few weeks to unwind and we couldn’t be more stoked to get back on the road and among our Kinfolk with some exciting stops and ending tour on a high-note with our 4 night New Years Eve shows with special guests (to be announced this week so stay tuned!) at the Boulder Theater!

Yonder Mountain can be found from coast to coast…literally. Our lady, Allie Kral is in the Northwest, Ben Kaufmann in California, Dave Johnston & Adam Aijala in Colorado and Jacob Jolliff in the Northeast. From time to time, it can be hard to get everyone under the same roof during breaks from tour. We wouldn’t let distance stop us and we decided to harness the powers of the inter-webs and put together this fun video of “Love Before You Can’t” – Skype style! Hope you enjoy and we hope to see you this Fall!

We hope to see you along the way: http://bit.ly/ymsbtours

YONDER MOUNTAIN PUNK BAND Takes the Stage On Halloween

Halloween is that one time of the year where you really get to be whoever you want. Step out of the daily grind and distractions of the everyday hustle. The one time of the year where you get to embody that special someone (or in some cases, things) that takes you for a night of tricks, treats and some good ole’ fun.

Well, Yonder Mountain String Band isn’t going to miss out this on opportunity to switch it up and manifest our inner-punk that has influenced each and every one of our band members, so without further a do, we give you YONDER MOUNTAIN PUNK BAND!

That’s right, join us for one night of some good ole’ shenanigans as we cover some of our favorite punk songs, Yonder style!

We’d love to see you at the LC Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio for this special night so get your ticket and prepare to rock out: http://bit.ly/halloweenympb

Can’t make it to this special night? Plenty of other tour dates this fall so check out our schedule while we highlight other great Yonder covers as well as originals from our latest album, “Black Sheep”,

Enjoy This Grateful Dead Cover of “Shakedown Street”

This past May, our friends at Jambase celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, by teaming up with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. They began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of their favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and we were honored when they asked Yonder Mountain String Band to cover “Shakedown Street”.

As Ben Kaufmann said, “Lets play a song, that everyone can like, whether you are 2 or maybe even as old as 26, may even as old as Jake Jolliff. Lets play a song called “Shakedown Street.”

Well…what do you think folks? Did they pass the audition?

In the next couple of months we will be asking our Kinfolk what covers they would like to see this Fall Tour. We invite you to take part in this conversation and much more by signing up for our exclusive emails.

So turn this one up, sip on your Sunday morning cup of joe, and let these vibes take you to another place and time on this beautiful Fall day.

8th Annual Mabon Celebration Welcomes Fall with the Colorado Community

It’s that one time of the year. The days start to shorten and those Colorado nights begin to cool down, beckoning your heavy coats from the closet under the stairs. The shift of seasons become present in Colorado high-country as trees begin to spot with autumnal colors, hinting that winter is just around the corner. The transformation from summer to fall provokes a certain nostalgia that takes you to autumns of past years and for us, it reminds us that the annual Mabon Celebration is upon us.  As a celebration of the end of summer, the fall harvest, and the Autumnal Equinox – The Mabon Celebration at the Planet Bluegrass Wildflower Pavilion holds a special place in our heart.

This year’s Mabon Celebration couldn’t have been better. Many of our Kinfolk, friends and family, gathered at the iconic Wildflower Pavilion in Lyons, Colorado for the 8th consecutive year of festivities featuring Yonder’s duo, Ben Kaufmann and Adam Aijala. For most of us, it’s become a tradition, as this night offers an intimate stage setting with 300 seats and a back-to-back set (and encore) of multi-instrumental performance covering some of Yonder’s classics as well as cross-genre originals from Ben and Adam.

Besides filling every seat in the house, this year’s Mabon was exceptional because Ben and Adam played two sets that focused on highlighting many of their original songs.

As Ben puts it, “There’s just Adam and me and our songs. It’s the only show we regularly do that is a sit-down show. It also is the only place I get to perform certain original songs that haven’t found a home in Yonder but I feel are my best work. Somehow the Mabon show has become a reunion. It certainly is a won’t-miss event for me, God willing and if the creek don’t rise.”

As if the night couldn’t get any better, a very special guest and long time friend of ours, Bonnie Paine from Elephant Revival, made a surprise sit-in that captivated all who were able to witness her graceful stage presence and  complimentary tones that reverberated from her washboard. It was magical to say the least.

Beyond the fortune to shuffle around instruments and play some of their originals, Ben acknowledges the long-standing ties that Yonder Mountain String Band with Planet Bluegrass and the Wildflower Pavilion itself.

Ben Explains,“Yonder got its first big festival opportunity at RockyGrass. As I remember it, we were these young kids (whose ambition perhaps exceeded our talent) and we got to share the stage with some legends of bluegrass music. A of them watched our show and were encouraging. Just in simple ways – a quiet supportive sentence or two that helped give us confidence. And then speaking as a music fan, I’ve seen some of the best shows at the Wildflower Pavilion, performances that are nothing short of inspiring. This venue is a way to keep that spirit alive once the festival is over. The same magical location, the same vibe, and a want to keep the music going throughout the year.”

If you’ve never considered attending the Mabon Celebration, then it’s time to change that –  there is no better way to welcome autumn and reflect on summer than with a community of good-hearted folk in one of the most beautiful Colorado venues for a night of performances by Ben and Adam. We hope to see you next year!
